Parvana wants to make Leilas hame the Green Valley, she cleans the house and the yard, makes a proper latrin and try to grow things. She and Asif helps Leia to clean her sores and clothes and Parvana takes care of Leilas grandmother. One day they notice that Hassan has wondered off, they find him at the edge of the mine fields. To make him stay they tie a rope around his belly so he can go only as far as they want him to go.

Leila is often out in the mine field, searching things she can use or sell. When she hears a explosion out from the mine field sha always goes out to look if someone is dead or hurted. Parvana tries to make Leila’s home the Green Valley becous she thinks that it’s going to be a safe place then. Parvana wants everyone to be safe and happy and I think that is a big reasonto why she makes it Green valley.

Parvana and the other kids stay where they are so they wont get blown up by a mine, but rather soon a girl finds them. She take them to her house, a mud shack. The girls name is Leila and she lives with her grandmother. The grandmother just lies on the floor, she is very sad becous Leilas mother has gone to search for Leilas brother and father, whom are gone in the war. The house is dark inside and it smells bad. It’s very messy and there is piles with clothes scattered in it. There’s also a tall cupboard and some shabby mats inside. Outside the house there’s a yard, it’s full with animal carcasses and litter. It smells very bad and Parvana thinks that Leila is using it as a latrin. Leia and her grandmother are the only people living in the little village so Leila is very happy when she got some kids to talk to. Leila always bury some of her food when she’s eating, she think that it’s protecting her against the mines in the mine fields.

 Parvana, Asif and Hassan just keep going. They have eaten something bad so their stomachs protests very much. They stay to rest a bit and Parvana begins to write to her friend Shauzia about a place she has made up. She tell Asif about it but he just think she’s stupid. Parvana gets furios with herself and begin to throw stones at the paper. Asif join her and they trow bigger and bigger stones. Suddenly when Parvana throw a very big stone a mine blows up and they all understand that they have been going into a minefield.

When Parvana and Asif have walked for a while they come to a village, they have not eaten for two days and they are very hungry and thirsty. Parvana gets a job, to clean out the chickenhouse. The owner promise they will get food then, but he only brings food for one person. They are very hungry and Parvana finds some eggs the owner has forget to pick. She consider to take them but she can’t do it, she knows that her father wouldn’t be proud of her if she stole. The man is very mean to them and they decide to return to stole the eggs and a chicken later. Parvana says that grownups shouldn’t turn their backs on children and I think that’s right. The man shouldn’t just ignore that the children were hungry, thirsty and tired. Of course he didn’t had to let them live with him and take them as his own children but he could at least give them somewhere to sleep over the night and food for three persons.

Asif decides to come with Parvana, he says it’s becouse she will be very annoyed if he comes, but I think he is alone and wants a friend to talk to. He just don’t know how to say it to her.

Parvana tells the boy that there is probably a treasure hidden in the cave. She says that Alexander the great buried it because it was to heavy to carry with him. She tells him that it is lots and lots of gold and diamonds in a chest and that they have to dig it up. Asif want the treasure too and they start to dig. Even if it’s very unlikly they finds a chest they do, but it isn’t filleed with gold, it’s just some bullets. Both Parvana and Asif is very disappointed…

Parvana finds a cave with a boy inside. He has only one leg and is very dirty. He first try to scare her away, but she stays and finds out that his name is Asif. He is very bossy and cranky and thinks he can control her just becous she is a girl. When Parvana decides to leave he goes with her.

 When Parvana is on her way to find her mother she goes by a abandoned village. She hears a crie and finds a baby. She decides to take care of him and names him Hassan. She thinks it would be nice to have a companion on her journey. Parvana doesn’t like to take thngs but she thinks that if she is going to take care of a baby she really needs to have food, water and clean clothes. She stays a rather long time in the village, but one day she sees talibans on their way to it. She hurries to gather the most important things and leave the village behind.
